Book: B is for Beer

For many, this will be “old news”, but I just finished the book “B is for Beer” by Tom Robbins and thought I’d pass along some info for anyone with kids or grandkids – or just into beer.

The book is a hybrid of kids’ story and fiction, seemingly written to be read to children whilst sipping on a sudsy beverage. I was shocked at how much I, with no kids or grandkids, liked this book. The main character of the book is Gracie, an almost six-year old girl who is about to discover the fizzy yellow drink her dad and uncle so enjoy – beer. Her road to discovery is part fantasy (unless there really is a beer fairy), part experiential and riddled with accurate beer facts (really!). The book does a great job breaking down the malting process, talks in general terms about hops and yeast, even carbonation. It also takes on the social aspects of beer consumption in a genuine manner – discussing the positive and negative consequences of alcohol. It doesn’t demonize beer, it doesn’t make it mysterious – instead, it merely talks about beer as a beverage and why people around the world enjoy it so much. Brilliant read.

So, if you have kids – if you don’t have kids – if you’re reading this I think you’ll appreciate the book. I couldn’t find it locally, so I ordered it online (Amazon.com). You can also buy an audio version of the book online or using iTunes. It’s a simple read, but light-hearted and humorous enough to enjoy whatever age you are.

FYI – about 120 pages in length with illustrations and easy to read font. Costs less than $15.
